Objectives Of EMRS
The Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, launched in 1997-98. It is designed specifically for the educational upliftment of Scheduled Tribe (ST) children living in remote and underdeveloped tribal areas.
1. Provide Quality Education in Remote Areas
The primary objective of EMRS is to deliver high-quality education to tribal children, especially those who live in far-flung and remote tribal-dominated areas where access to schools and modern infrastructure is limited. These schools aim to ensure that children are not deprived of learning due to geographical or socio-economic barriers.
- Medium of instruction: English or regional language
- Curriculum: CBSE/State Board aligned
- Classes: From Grade VI to XII
2. Promote Holistic Development
EMRS schools are not just academic institutions—they also focus on physical, mental, emotional, and ethical development of children. The aim is to nurture future-ready individuals who are confident, skilled, and aware of their roots.
- Emphasis on sports, arts, music, yoga, cultural activities
- Exposure to vocational training and life skills
- Use of technology, smart classrooms, and digital learning tools
3. Bridge the Educational Gap Between Tribes and Mainstream Society
Historically, tribal communities have lagged behind in education. EMRS aims to reduce this gap by providing a level playing field for tribal students to compete and succeed at par with other sections of society.
- Encourages tribal students to appear for competitive exams
- Supports higher education aspirations (medical, engineering, civil services)
- Reduces school dropout rates among tribal children
4. Residential and Free Schooling with Modern Infrastructure
One of the core features of EMRS is the residential nature of the schools, meaning students live and study in a fully-equipped campus.
- 100% free education, food, uniforms, books, health care, and hostel facilities
- Campuses are designed with modern classrooms, libraries, science labs, sports complexes
- Schools are usually built in areas with 50% or more tribal population
5. Empower Tribal Communities through Education
By educating children, EMRS plays a direct role in empowering tribal families and communities.
- Educated youth contribute to economic and social progress of their community
- Encourages gender equality by promoting education for tribal girls
- Helps reduce poverty, child marriage, and social discrimination
6. Preserve and Promote Tribal Culture
Even while focusing on modern education, EMRS respects and integrates the rich cultural heritage of tribal communities.
- Encourages students to learn and preserve their mother tongue, traditional music, dance, crafts, and folklore
- Organizes inter-school tribal cultural events
- Teachers are often trained in multilingual and culturally responsive teaching
The objective of EMRS is much more than just educating tribal children—it is a transformative mission aimed at creating equity, dignity, opportunity, and empowerment for India's indigenous communities through a strong foundation in education.
